Compared with the oceans of the word the Aegean is a mere deep-blue, often turbulent, pond. But ranged beside the civilizations of the world the Aegean is a colossus.
within its bounds lie traces of man's earlies gropings after culture, seen in Mousterian & Magdalenian tools on Tinos & Milos.
There are Neolithic settlements & the breath-taking marvels of Cretan & Mycenean palaces, the worship of the Great Mother & mysterious rites of the Cabeiri, Orpheus & Dionysus. In the footsteps of the first-comers (Phoenicians, Carians, Pelasgians, Minyans, Dorians, Achaeans, Aeolians & Ionians) others later passed this way and left their mark: Persians, Romans, Saracens, Berbers, Genoese, Venetians, Turks, Albanians and in our own day refugees from Asia Minor - the whole gamut of people's spawned in the eastern Mediterranean basin. In this manner the Aegean was to experience, besides the pre-Hellenic, archaic and classical civilizations, the influences of civilization's that succeeded them
