ppint. 15th Jul 2019		'' we need you to make a meaningless sacrifice...''° - by the time the anglo-french norwegian expedition (invasion farce) set off (''mr. hitler has missed the bus'' - tory p.m. neville chamberlain), the german army was already in control of all norwegian cities and major towns, airfields and, through its luftwaffe, the air. - the british army had no troops trained to fight in mountains, nor in snow and ice; nor did it have any skis; the french had skis, and some units trained in fighting in winter conditions, but they had no straps without which they could not use their skis: the expeditionary force could only move by road, where it was very vulnerable to bombing and strafing. it had no tanks, no anti-aircraft guns and no artillery. - there was no concerted attempt to exploit the naval action at narvik, nor any real plan nor intention to do so: and covering the retreat from it cost britain an aircraft carrier, most of her crew, and both her aircraft and those of the raf fighters landed onto her in the withdrawal from norway. not one of the most glorious episodes of word war two - but you wouldn't know that from this book. . ° - approx. quote, from the very last blackadder
