ppint. 16th Mar 2021		6/1940 first penguin books uk p/b printing, first english language p/b edition cover art (none) cover price (none) cover (d-j) art (none) cover (d-j) price 6d 248pp? including titles, indica, introduction, foreword etc. 8/1940 near-identical second penguin books uk p/b printing n.b. penguin books p/b cat# 601 with multicoloured cover art is the merkin first mmpb edition (1946) penguin books ltd.'s standard design had settled upon the two solid horizontal bars of colour (orange for a long time) for penguin imprint books and d-js: ian ballantine, who'd (with others) set up the merkin importation and distribution of penguin books for penguin books ltd. knew that more attractive, and ideally eye-catching colourful cover art was *essential* to compete with merkin mmpb publishers' covers on the newsstands which were the primary mmpb outlets, and started putting this knowledge into practice when supplies of british-printed penguin books dried up during the second world war and the new york operation started publishing (and ordering the printing of) its own editions - and of their covers. allen lane, the founder-owner-publisher of penguin books ltd. disagreed vehemently over this, and after a brief transition via an intentionally short-lived penguin-signet (and the pelican-mentor) imprint, signet (and mentor) books went their separate way as an independent merkin publisher. contents: introduction (nf) hugh walpole (1921) a foreword: which asserts nothing (fnf) james branch cabell (1919) jurgen (f) james branch cabell
