at least two of the rising-by-1-each-reprinting five-digit cat#s are then missing - i've no record of having seen, nor seen reported: 66954, 66955; it's possible they were skipped in grosset & dunlap's attempt to match the five-digit cat# to the actual (re-)printing number.
with changing ownership from a. a. wyn to charter communications, inc., and the latter's financial over-extension leading to some combination of ignorance, incompetence, and possible um, ''fast dealing'', this in turn led to shoddy and potentially fraudulently incomplete record-keeping, failure to keep accurate records of royalties owed authors, and even of reprintings of successful books...
this didn't begin to get sorted until action by the science fiction writers of america (''sfwa''); some time after charter communications, inc. was bought by grosset & dunlap some time after 1972, and their tom doherty hired james p. ''jim'' baen from universal publishing & distribution's galaxy magazine where he'd turned a major sf magazine in decline just about back into one of the ''big three'', on the understanding that jim baen would have editorial control, a real budget, and the reassurance that problems with outstanding royalties would be sorted so far as there was any paper trail rediscoverable - which included british authors' friends finding uk p/bs licenced from ace-charter, where no written records remained in the charter communications files grosset & dunlap inherited. . .
a lack of understanding of the admittedly less than ''intuitively obvious'' five-digit cat# system led to its getting bent even where there was no intent to deceive - e.g. by the cat# only being increased when the cover price was increased - instead of with every new printing - and sometimes well-intentioned errors where people attempting to recalculate how many previous printings there'd actually been of particular titles got it wrong, whether from lack of information in charter's files, or simple miscounting.
the next cat# next so far seen/seen reported is 66956, and then there seem to be at least three different printings with cat# 66957. . . (this comment is from another edition of this book)
