ppint. 13th Dec 2022		ballantine books ltd. first printing, first uk p/b edition - but rather confusingly states fifth printing in publishing history° no unicorn's head ''ballantine adult fantasy'' series logo on front cover cover art by barbara remington (retained from ballantine books, inc. first uniform edition mmpb 1967-9) b+w interior illustrations by keith henderson (from 1922) cover price 40p, 95c south africa, $1.25 australia, $1.25 new zealand 544pp. (check) including xxii pp. titles, indicia, nf introduction by orville prescott (1952), nf introduction by james stevens (1967) etc, end pp. advertising number in isbn10 field is the precursor sbn of nine digits which this p/b's cover actually bears. an equivalent isbn is trivially derivable from this, but the cover bears none such. ° - indicia publishing history gives four printings and two specifically canadadian printings in addition to this ballantine books ltd. first uk p/b edition printing, which was printed in canada. - it may prove necessary to amass all the barbara remington-cover art-bearing ballantine books, inc. and ballantine books ltd. printings in one place, to sort this out conclusively. (- and the later pan/ballantine imprint uk p/b printings from pan books don't exactly help bibliographers, neither, giving this as 1971 and including it as the first in their accounting of pan books' pan/ballantine printings, bearing the same cover art - but their editions/printings bear (0-)345-09740-8 and then 0-330-23841-8 sbns/isbns) (this comment is from another edition of this book)
