| ppint. 14th Oct 2020 | (world distributors (manchester) ltd.(?)) viking books first printing, first uk p/b edition first uk edition was the robert hale h/cvr (1954), q.v. cover art by ronald w. smethurst (signed rws) cover price 2/- 192 small format pp. including titles, indicia etc, end pp. advertising this uk viking books imprint was set up by one or more of the pemberton brothers, who was/were also connected in at least the early days of world distributors (manchester) ltd, wdl books, consul books, etc. the pembertons story in publishing, politics and elsewhere seems curious, sometimes less than pleasant, frequently obscure, and in danger of disappearing. i no longer have any contact in manchester with people involved in the wholesale or retail side of news agencies and the category fiction (and comics, and cartoon booklets) side of the book trade in the fifties & early sixties, alas - anyone who does - or was, themselves - please put into print/online their memories of this disappeared world of half a century ago! | |
