From the introduction:

The year is 1960. In Hamburg's red-light district of St. Pauli, three art students, among them an aspiring photographer, Jürgen Vollmer, step into a rock dive called Kaiserkeller, magically drawn towards a sound unlike anything they have ever heard before. Performing in front of a gang of 'Rockers' is a young band from Liverpool - black leather jackets, black jeans, pointy shoes and pompadour hair. They call themselves The Beatles, they are young, complete unknowns and still a group of five, though without Ringo: cool John, Paul the charmer, George, still underage at 17 - which meant he had to leave the club by 10pm - Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. They play rock'n'roll. Except for the three art students who don't actually belong there, nobody is really paying attention to them. For the next three months they show up each night, and become friends with the Beatles. When, in 1961, the band, still far from famous, switches venues to Hamburg's Top Ten Club, Vollmer is there again, this time with a borrowed camera. And this is how the photos - some of them orchestrated by him - of this volume came to be: unique, unrepeatable, deeply moving...
