| | Since I made my comment regarding the ex library book I have spoken to an ex librarian who told me that he used to send a pile of books to be rebound and they would come back looking as good as new.
He also told me that, when removing the books from stock they would tear out the title page, as it was easier when deleating the books from their system to work from a small pile of single pages rather than a stack of books. (this comment is from another edition of this book) |

| | it was sop for uk public libraries to have their hardcover stock copies rebound when their original bindings began to fall apart, if the pages of the signatures were still in good condition (plus some evaluation of whether a fiction title was still popular, or a non-fiction book worth keeping in stock - perhaps being transferred to the reserve collection after rebinding, or worth keeping for other reasons): the rebinding was, i was informed, cheaper if the original dust-jacket was still in good enough condition to be used, laminated to the re-bound book's boards, than if a new cloth (''rexine'', or whatever) was required; but even the latter cost considerably less than buying a replacement new book - and that's if the book concerned was still in print.
when the sainted dame hilda margaret's attack upon labour (and some tory) councils' budgets hit hard, and especially after she destroyed her bête noire of the glc°, and with it, the glc-wide london reference library (inherited mainly from the lcc°°, but also from the home counties' udcs and rdcs°°° which had been subsumed into the glc), our public library system could only be defended successfully up to a point - a point decided by the individual counties' councils (and the individual local library systems which had shared the london-wide reserve collection between them were no longer able to afford to maintain the co-operative system, which was destroyed).
i don't know how much of the libraries' rebinding service survives, nor how well it is now used.
° - greater london council
°° - london county council
°°° - urban & rural district councils (this comment is from another edition of this book) |

| | Cover info scans added from two different UK hardback editions. The one without a price is from the cover shown here, the other is from an ex library copy.
The library copy has had it's boards and title page removed 10 mm chopped of the bottom of the book and cover then re-assembled using plain black boards (no aurthor or title). It seems to be a lot of work for a library to do. (this comment is from another edition of this book) |
