ppint. 2nd Dec 2020		thanks, david - they demonstrate that quartet did vary the d-j flap typography to give the midway and the h/cvr edition d-js their own separate prices and isbns. (and that the art-less card covers of the midway editions were definitely not always white, unprinted.) they were equally definitely a strange beast in the uk publishing world.

ppint. 1st Dec 2020		quartet books' ''midway editions'' differed from all other uk trade p/b or yp/b editions i've seen, in that they were bound in frequently unprinted, usually plain white card covers and distributed in full colour-printed dust-jackets - shared with those of the hardcover edition, where there was one. quartet books' midway editions were mostly produced as a run-on of the quartet books hardcover edition, as were the yp/b editions of granada publishing (later grafton, later harpercollinspublishers), but unlike granada publishing (etc.), quartet books also published midway editions as trade edition p/bs instead of a hardcover edition, where quartet judged there'd be no likelihood of a hardcover edition proving profitable, even with the costs of its production reduced by its sharing its signatures with those of a yp/b. it's also possible quartet books published midway editions of titles where they held only licences to the paperback rights as, at least initially, trade p/b edition rights were not mentioned separately in publishing contracts - and so were automatically legally included with all other p/b rights: most hitherto specialist hardcover publishers in the uk learned fairly quickly to retain trade p/b rights to themselves, as they could make a major contribution to the profitability of a hardcover edition whose printing costs they shared - and thus, to the hardcover publishers' finances - or at least to specify them separately, and charge extra for p/b licences if they were to be included therewith...
