| | three near-identical berkley mmpb printings/editions share this cover art & cat#; two share cover price:
the 11/1957 third printing does not bear "ANC" above the 25¢ cover price in small black letters - i.e. the displayed cover image is of the third printing, which is not identified in the indica. its final printed page bears a display advert for a book entitled "more sweetie pie".
the 12/1955 (us) first printing and the canadian printing both bear "ANC" in small black letters above the 25¢ cover price in white (us printing); advert in end is for "possible worlds of sf" edited by groff conklin;
a 35¢ cover price printed in black, in white box cut out of artwork in place of the merkin cover price, indicates canadian second printing (carcass of book stated printed in canada, cover printed in us, but no date is indicated for this edition/printing).
the "ANC" indicates the merkin newsstand distributor, american news corporation, which was the largest merkin news distributor of newspapers & periodicals (including for the pulps, and the later digest-format magazines, including all sf magazines - and these newfangled mass-market paperback books) for many decades, until control of it was obtained by asset-strippers who reduced its operations to a rump by selling off all its city-and-large-town centre warehouses...)
(and it didn't help that anc were the significantly unsuccessful defendants against prosecution under anti-trust legislation for unfair business practices...) (frederik pohl doesn't mention this - but he may well not've known about it |
