Frederic Seaman was hired by Yoko Ono as John Lennon's personal assistant in February, 1979. This was the period when the great rock star was staying out of the public eye, being a devoted 'house-husband', baking bread and bringing up his young son Sean. That, anyway, was the image that was carefully presented to the outside world, but Fred found that life with the Lennons was nothing like that.

In fact, John was living a bizarre sort of half-life, doing little apart from browsing through books and magazines, and watching the giant TV set in his bedroom: a moody, self-sentenced prisoner in the Dakota apartment while Yoko took care of business in the office downstairs. Fred soon got caught up in this strange regime, where decisions were made only after consultations with an army of astrologers, clairvoyants and numerologists, where strange and expensive purchases arrived daily, never to be looked at again, and where Sean ran riot through a wonderland of toys, videos and records. For John there were drugs, but little sex and still less rock and roll.

For Fred it proved to be much more than just a job. Over the next few months he was on call twenty-four hours a day, by turns intrigued, charmed and infuriated by his new employers. John Lennon, meanwhile, was slowly emerging from his long lethargy; he started to travel with Fred on shopping sprees and holidays; and - to Fred's delight - he began to write music again. In Bermuda they worked together on songs that would appear on Double Fantasy, and back in New York Fred was again closely involved in the recording and publicising of what would be John's final performances, before Mark Chapman's bullets cruelly ended his life.

JPGR&B SUBS 29th Apr 2021		Continuation of Notes: John's death was a shattering event for all who had admired his work with the Beatles, with Yoko or on his own, but for Fred it was a personal tragedy that turned to horror as he was beaten up and arrested, accused of stealing John Lennon's journals: the start of a nightmare that can only now be dispelled by the publication of his long-suppressed book, which gives for the first time the truth behind these distressing experiences. Living On Borrowed Time is a touching, bittersweet memoir by one who knew and loved John Lennon, the compelling final chapter in the haunted life of one of the most charismatic figures of the twentieth century.
