distinguish also from at least one further near-identical impression of this edition dated 1949, which is probably not the same as this copy:
near-identical third impression of the 1947 edition (d-j seen, but book not examined closely) which is bound in green cloth-covered boards
- i.e. there would seem to be three (possibly more) impressions of the 1947 first edition, and at least a second hardcover edition dated 1949;
- ''further research required: please supply funds for an m.a. course of a year or more...''
collins group/wm. collins sons (re-check) lions imprint p/b
(collins bought gordon landsborough's may fair books ltd., including the armada books imprint and list, subsumed bits into different parts of the collins group, and i'm not yet sure of the exact order of the changes in the armada, armada lions, collins lions, process - or, indeed, if there was a single exact process...) (it's why there's an armada lions lion logo hiding on the front cover - they kept this, though they don't seem to've kept the may fair books imprint going long - or the apparently related icon/ikon imprint going at all.)

later collins/fontana lions p/b editions were abridged, but this unabridged edition may have seen reprints. (this comment is from another edition of this book)
#1: "the tree that sat down" (1945) (this novel)
#2: "the stream that stood still" (1948), q.v.
#3: "the mountain of magic" (1950), q.v.
a much later novel returns to judy, mrs. judy and miss smith, but lacks any apparent connexion in setting, or almost any trace, feel or touch whatsoever of the original three:
but be aware of an abridged edition published by collins in lions p/b with this same cover art, and re-printed repeatedly. (this comment is from another edition of this book)
