| | doubleday h/cvr first printing, first edition
cover (d-j) art by joseph mugnaini (credited on front flap)
cover (d-j) price $2.95
printer-bookbinder's date gutter-code "23" on p.262 (last printed?)
264pp. (check) including titles, indicia, table-of-contents etc, bound with endpapers between cloth-covered boards
the near-identical 10/1958:merkin doubleday sf book club edition: dust-jacket flap betrays this (unless price corner clipped); also its printing date gutter-code on p.262 differs ("32" for 10/58) |

not first mmpb edition
cover art by hans arnold (unsigned, credited)
near-meaningless daw books collector no.286
cover price $1.95
256pp. including titles, indicia, table-of-contents etc, end p. advertising
refer to indicia publishing history to see if carcass of copy held was canadadian- or merkin- printed
no priority established nor liable to be, both state first daw printing, april 1978
and both bearing full first printing number-string 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
should the first two digits, "1 2", be absent from the indicia printing number-string,
then it is the third printing, which yr hmbl srppnt. has not yet seen, nor seen reported:
one of the two simultaneous first printings would retrospectively be deemed to have been
the second printing (this is conventionally taken to have been the canadian-carcased variant).
if this is the case, please wybsg as to post a comment "here" giving the precise wording
(new american library, who produced and distributed daw mmpbs for donald wollheim
changed their systemic declaration of printings from time to time, and also whether
they stated the printing or publication dates of identical reprints - or, indeed, neither.) (this comment is from another edition of this book) |
