the collaborative novel h. l. gold, the founding editor of galaxy, persuaded frederik pohl to enter pseudonymously in the simon & schuster-galaxy competition for first novels, none of the received entries being worthy winners in gold's professional judgment - or, possibly, even publishable.°
the novel was duly serialised in galaxy vol.10 #3, #4, #5, #6; 6, 7, 8, 9/1955; bre #30, #31, #32, #33;
part one was the cover story, art by fred kirberger, all four parts had four b+w illustrations by sanford kossin in the merkin originals, but respectively four, three, two, and four, in the bre (british reprint editions).
° - accounts differ slightly; see ''the way the future was'' frederik pohl (1978), q.v., and the accounts by pohl and by lester del rey in this and the preceding 1980 ballantine/del rey mmpb of ''preferred risk''.
