ppint. 17th Jan 2019		tarzan series #13 #1: "tarzan of the apes" (1914), q.v. for series listing, and links. series cross-over: also pellucidar series #4: #1: "at the earth's core" (1922), q.v. for series listing and links. godfrey philips four square books p/b first printing (1959) cover art by edward mortelmans (art signed "mortelmans" bottom edge fly corner) cover price 2'6 192pp. including titles, indica etc. distinguish from near-identical 1962 second printing sharing cat# 168 by reference to indica publishing history which adds line giving year of second printing cover art retained for 1964 third printing, cat# 1061, 3'6, but cropped to fit cover redesign. (the 1967 fourth printing, cat# 1061 3/6, has completely new cover art and re-redesigned cover.) 1959 first printing indica gives four square books as being published by landsborough publications ltd. and title page bears the four squares logo above "landsborough publications limited" the landsborough in question was gordon landsborough, one of the movers and shakers in post-world war two british paperback publishing for three or four decades, who must've possessed a silver tongue, persuading in this case the tobacco giant godfrey philips to finance the new paperback publishers, four square books. in the early sixties, times mirror of los angeles bought 51% of four square books from godfrey philips, and the remaining 49% near the end of that decade, via their uk company new english library, after which four square books became first an imprint of that company, and then was subsumed into the nel / new english library imprint.
