 Not one to go into without knowing what you're getting into though... if you know what I mean.

I thought this was going to be some kind of high brow philosophical lecture on the virtues of moral virtues.... little realising that it was a bleak, grim, often surreal, tortured nightmare with the most brutal murder in it that gives se7en, or any modern crime novel a run for ti's money.

Powerful stuff though, and a cracking read.

 One of my favourite ever reads. Simply stunning. Not just the story (which is superb) but for me it's the descriptive writing, you can almost smell the setting, the surroundings, the dirt and the squalor. Hugely important, and influential, fiction. Without it so many other novels simply could not exist (American Psycho owes a huge debt to Dostoevsky for starters).

10/10 all day long.
