ppint. ● 10th Jun 2022		''there were two printings of the first impression'' an impression is a printing of an edition - - it's the older term for the same thing, from the days of the printing press, and movable type-setting, when the printing process literally - pun intentional - made an impression in the paper. - as further impressions were taken, not only did the type wear down - making the letters on the printed page very slightly larger, and a bit fuzzier - because less clearly straight-edged - but it could also fracture, especially at right-angled junctions, and parts of letters be lost - e.g. the top lines of upper-case ''F''s, the tails of ''e''s, etc. - eventually the resulting impression would be judged unacceptable, and a decision taken as to whether the text of the book should be re-set - which would sometimes be taken advantage of as an opportunity to correct errors made in the original setting, or to incorporate revisions or additions made by the author, or to add new introductions by respected critics or editors, or advertising for new works by the author published by the same company, etc. - which would be a new edition.
