In 1964 Bob Whitaker, a young photographer based in Melbourne, photographed Brian Epstein during the Beatles' first tour of Australia. Epstein liked the results so much that he invited him to London to photograph the Beatles & his other bands.

The result is a unique collection of photographs. Unique because for the two most successful years of their career Whitaker was present both in the public & private lives of the world's most famous band. Unique also because none of the pictures have ever been seen since. In 1972, after covering a wide range of the artistic & political events of the sixties, Bob Whitaker gave up photography for farming & literally threw all his pictures into the chicken shed!

The re-emergence of this singular collection of photographs has produced an extraordinary reaction amongst those who have seen it. Familiar & yet totally new, four of the most famous faces of the twentieth century stare out at us from the pages of history - young, fresh-faced, naive, but already enjoying fame and fortune previously unheard of in the music industry. Whitaker's reportage photographs show both the public face of the Beatles - on stage, giving interviews, talking to fans - and their rare moments of relaxation - painting together in a Tokyo hotel room, George decorating his house, John and Cynthia posing in their garden. In addition, once he had gained their confidence, he persuaded them to collaborate in group shots which were entirely different in style and content from any that were taken of the Beatles either before or since.

This book is a remarkable record which will delight fans of the Beatles, all those who are fascinated by the sixties & anyone interested in contemporary photography.
