| ppint. 6th Nov 2018 | reference copy provided courtesy of tony at the old pier bookshop, morecambe seafront. yr hmbl srppnt. never saw a five star paperback on-sale as a new book at its cover price: sfaicr they all appeared only in the "reduced price paperbacks" compartment at one end of the bottom row of woolworth's chrome-plated wire shelving in the "toys" department. the price they were actually price gun-labelled was 7½p. this was true in every woolworth's yr hmbl srppnt. entered 1972-74 in about half a dozen cities and towns in northern england, northwestern england and the midlands, including manchester, the home city of their publisher, pbs limited. it would have been extremely difficult for any bookshop or book trade wholesaler to order any particular five star paperback, as they neither bore nor were allocated sbns or cat#s, which leaves "boxing out" by newsagents wholesalers (including world distributors of manchester) as almost the only possible distribution channel in the british isles for the titles in the series as they were published. so i'm fairly confident (but not absolutely sure) they were produced as instant remainders: did any bookcatter see them on-sale as new books at the full 25p cover price during this period - and, if so, where? did any bookcatter see them on-sale as new books outside the uk-of-gb-and-norn-iron and the republic of ireland at the full 25p cover price, or at any of the cover prices printed on them, in the appropriate markets, during this period or later - and again, where? reports of sightings - or actual purchases - of these remarkably shy beasts in the wild would be appreciated.
