David Whiteley 22nd Sep 2020		@ppint I think your second option "- or it could've been a strip-and-rebind job with decimal-only uk price" is the correct one as this book is smaller than other NEL books that I own. This would also explain the two SBN No.s. It must have been originally issued with 450004856 in April 1970 and then rebound with a new cover and No. 450011879 about 1973 which is about the time this No. would have been used. No sign of a double card spine though. (this comment is from another edition of this book)



ppint. 22nd Sep 2020		i'd certainly've expected the 4/1970 new english library/nel p/b printing to be dual uk-priced. nel seem to've dropped dual uk pricing at the end of 1971, titles from 2/1972 (incl.) are priced only in p. but unless this adds a publishing history line stating it's the second nel p/b printing of the unexpurgated book, i s'pose it could be a later bind-up of the first printing's signatures, as that print-run sold - nel were very slow to adjust their print-runs downwards, as sales per title dropped during the seventies. - or it could've been a strip-and-rebind job with decimal-only uk price (though i don't recall nel going in for these; granada/grafton definitely did, for panther & mayflower imprint p/bs, the re-priced editions sometimes bearing new cover art, and always being slightly smaller in size - height and across the page, as the recovered editions had to be guillotined to produce straight edges.) (they also had double card spines, as the new card covers were glued onto the previous covers' spines...) (this comment is from another edition of this book)

I left the publication date blank as April 1970 can't be correct as this was before UK decimalisation and books at that time had the price in both LSD and new pence. This one only states 40p. Looking at entries for other NEL books I would guess it was published around 1973 (this comment is from another edition of this book)

ppint. 21st Sep 2020		yes, for a while nel p/bs included a faux sbn in the indica formed by prefixing their four digit cat# (or what would have been this) with their sbn publisher code of 450 plus as many zeros as it took to bulk the number-string out to nine digits. i've no idea why they did this - nor whether there's anyone around who worked there and might remember why. (the last numeral of a real sbn is the checksum digit, calculated from the first eight digits, which can be used to detect errors in a quoted sbn, including accidental transposition.)
