ppint. 21st Feb 2019		ace books mmpb undated° first printing, first edition cover art by jack gaughan (uncredited: source of attribution?) b+w interior illustration by jack gaughan (signed with his jg monogram) cover price 40¢ 192pp. including titles, indicia etc. ° - no date of publication/printing given, 1964 copyright date taken as year of publication the three next known ace books mmpb printings all share new cover art by michael whelan (art signed with his monogram) & cover design whilst retaining jack gaughan's b+w art, are also 192pp. including titles, indicia etc, reproduced from the small pocketbook format ace books mmpb first edition setting, and are also undated other than with the 1964 copyright date: cat# 06851 (11/1975 from locus #190, 30/6/1976) cat# 06852 (c. 1-5/1976 by end p. advertising) cat# 06853 (late 1977-1978 by mzb re-issue programme, (very late 1977-) 1978 by cover price) after which ace books published a greatly revised and extended edition, which further adds the original darkover novelette, "to keep the oath" to the book, and bears new cover art by michael whelan: cat# 06854-5, isbn 0-441-06854-5 $2.25 (5/1979), q.v.



ppint. 26th Apr 2024		the next arrow books edition of which i am aware is the century hutchinson arrow books (1987) (?legend imprint?) first uk printing of the comprehensively revised, doubled-in-length edition #18a q.v. confusingly, this nowhere upon the front cover mentions that it is the - far larger - revised edition - and it was published bearing the same isbn as the uk p/b of the shorter edition. i doubt richard evans cared...
