ppint. 24th Feb 2024		mis-accounted the third printing: even allowing for the corporate forgetting of ace books' 1963 first mmpb printing (F-239), resulting in their first ace books five-digit systematic cat# allocated being 81000, this should've progressively accounted 81001 the second (instead of the third) printing, 81002 the third (instead of the fourth), and this 81003 the fourth, instead of the fifth ace books printing it actually was... so, even with the best of intentions on the parts of grosset & dunlap's tom doherty and jim baen, and then by the berkley publishing group's management, understanding of the system's rules was fading, and the system was breaking down. ppint. 7th Jun 2022		(?charter communications?) ace books mmpb second printing° cover art by john schoenherr (unsigned, credited) cover price 75¢ 256pp. including titles, indicia etc, end pp. advertising ° - there was evidently no stock of 1963's F-239 remaining in the warehouse, and no trace of it by 1969 on ace books' catalog/order form, so the spiffy new ace five-digit systematic cat# allocated was 81000, indicating a first mmpb printing, instead of 81001 indicating the second it actually was. this need not've been deliberate mis-accounting; the established practice to deem remaining stock of alpha-prefix catalog numbers to've been allocated first printing cat#s in the new system couldn't cope with there being no such stock *and* no trace of it, therefore, on the printed paper catalogues, immediately before the new system came into use.
