John Lennon's place as one of the greatest figures in modern music has been assured ever since his epic rise to fame in the early 'sixties as leader of the Beatles. It was during those same epoch-making years that Dezo Hoffmann was their friend and photographer: his pictures helped fix the down-to-earth, happy-go-lucky image which for most people is the impression that survives of that period in rock history.

The photographs here date from 1962 to 1970, but concentrate mainly on 1963 and 1964 - the years in which the Beatles won over both Britain and America. Dezo Hoffmann was there to record John's every mood and moment, giving us fascinating glimpses of Lennon as hero and husband, conqueror and clown, boy-next-door and genius.

The fact that these photographs were conceived originally as news pictures, spontaneous and unposed, adds an essential realism enhanced by Hoffmann's personal approach of always using available light in preference to flash. This technique, learned during his years as a film-maker, gives the pictures a satisfying depth and substance.

Had John lived, he would have been exactly 45 years old at the time of this collection's publication. Here, for all John Lennon's admirers, fans and friends, is not only an excellent photo album, but a reminder of a phenomenon.

JPGR&B SUBS 6th Aug 2023		Review Annotation: A photographer with probably one of the largest archives of early and mid-1960s photographs, Dezo Hoffman's book John Lennon was published in 1985 as a luxurious coffee-table book. The work contains several interesting portraits of the former Beatle, most of which had already appeared elsewhere but, in some cases, had been chopped for other publication purposes. Following the photo collection there is a section entitled 'Captions', which provides further information on the individual photos. The overall quality of the book is excellent and the photographs are both revealing and mysterious. Revealing in that Hoffman certainly seems to capture the Beatles, and especially Lennon via his expert portraiture techniques, but also mysterious in that the gestures and proxemics caught by the camera remain elusive.
