ppint. 12th Jun 2022		new american library signet books mmpb simultaneous ''fifth merkin'' & second canadadian printings cover art by stanley meltzoff (retained from the previous three merkin and one canadadian printings) cover price 60¢ 192pp. including titles, indica, introduction etc, end pp. postscript refer to indica publishing history to see if carcass of copy held is the second canadadian or the fourth merkin printing, declared the fifth... new american library got rather muddled by their starting to produce canadadian-carcassed copies: initially they declared them separately - but then tried to account for them by skipping a name number of printing in the accounting of the merkin-carcassed printings: this would produce the next merkin-carcassed printing being accounted the seventh printing - retrospectawigglilly re-accounting the second canadadian-carcassed copies the missing sixth merkin mmpb printing, etc... this confusion also infected the accounting of printings of daw books mmpbs from 1972 on, as new american library produced these for daw books, inc. as well as distributing them north of the parallel (where the canadadian rights were held). the reasons for producing canadadian-printed ''books'' (carcasses) whilst sharing merkin-printed covers were a combination of canadian law, including tax laws, and the relative advantages of scale in maximising the more expensive colour-printed card covers print runs.
