Foreword by Iain Softley, Director and Screenwriter of the film Backbeat.

From the back cover:

The spectre of Stuart Sutcliffe will hang over the Beatles for ever even though he resigned as bass guitarist to follow his dream of becoming a painter a year before the Fab Four took of into the stratosphere with Love Me Do. But his influence on the Beatles is oceanic; he bequeathed the group its name, its look, and its notion that opo music could be Art.

Stuart Sutcliffe also stands apart from the Beatles as a promising artistic talent, his paintings now exhibited worldwide. His death at the age of 21 from a brain haemorrhage cut short any chance to prove himself as a major artist and left in its wake an enigma. For generations of Beatles it also preserved Sutcliffe as a doomed pop hero, recognized only for his dark glasses and unsmiling cool.

This first full biography of Sutcliffe finally tells of the entangled ties with friends and family, of Sutcliffe's intense relationships with John Lennon and photographer girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr, of the breaking away from his Scouse roots to embrace bohemia and of his creative legacy. It is co-written by Stuart's younger sister, Pauline.
