ppint. 20th Oct 2019		prequel to the dorsai! trilogy: #0: "necromancer" (1962) (this novel) aka "no room for man" (macfadden, manor merkin mmpbs 1963-1974), q.v. the dorsai! trilogy: #1: "(the) tactics of mistake" (1971), q.v. #2: "soldier, ask not" (1967), q.v. #3: "dorsai!" (1976), q.v. abridged as "the genetic general" (1960), q.v. abridgment also aka "dorsai!" (sphere uk p/bs from 1975) q.v. (as also do translations made prior to 1976 - and possibly, afterwards...) plus a number of novellas and short stories, including: "steel brother" (1952) (possibly...) "act of creation" (1957) "warrior" (1965) "brothers" (1973)) "amanda morgan" (1979) "lost dorsai" (1980) various collections include one or more of these shorter works, including books presented as being "dorsai!" series titles: be wary, the contents of some books sharing a title do differ, and there are overlaps of contents: #a: "the spirit of dorsai" (1979) #bi: "lost dorsai" (merkin) (1980) #bii: "lost dorsai" (uk) (1984) #c: "the dorsai companion" (1986) #d: "lost dorsai: the new dorsai companion" (1993) the dorsai! trilogy was later subsumed into being the middle part of the author's "the childe cycle" (incomplete at gordon r. dickson's death, 31/1/2001), appending: #4: "the final encyclopedia" (1984), q.v. #5: "the chantry guild" (1988), q.v. #6: ("childe" planned but not published, possibly not, or only very partially written) plus a prequel trilogy to "the final encyclopedia": #p: "young bleys" (1991), q.v. #q: "other" (1994), q.v. and, published after gordon r. dickson's death #r: "antagonist" gordon r. dickson, david w. wixon (2007), q.v. #p, #q & #r apparently lead up to, and provide context for, the events of #4 & #5. i've (as yet) read none of these last five novels, and cannot vouch for their series position by internal chronology: informed advice from bookcatters welcome in further comments. . .

ppint. 18th Jun 2021		undated 1979° simultaneous daw books third mmpb printings sharing merkin-printed covers with new cover art by greg theakston (signed, credited) b+w frontispiece by jack gaughan (signed with his jg digraph, retained from previous daw mmpb printings) near-meaningless daw books collector number is dropped from the cover cover price $1.95 (canadadian-carcassed copies intended for distribution north of the parallel)° cover price $1.75 (wholly merkin-printed copies for general distribution) 192pp. including titles, indicia etc, end pp. advertising ° n.b. second letter of cat# alpha prefix not varied to reflect the different cover price refer also to indicia publishing history printing number line to distinguish from the two daw books first printings, one of which is notionally retrospectively accounted the second printing, hence these two become the third printing... no priority established nor liable to be, both drop '1' & '2' from indicia printing history number line ° - date of publication taken from both locus and ''future and fantastic worlds: a bibliographical retrospective of daw books 1972-1987'' sheldon jaffery (starmont house 1987) (this comment is from another edition of this book)
