Reviewfirst of a major science fiction original anthology series founded by e. j. carnell (aka john carnell, aka ted carnell) to continue publishing the authors and the kinds of sf he'd published as editor of new worlds, science fantasy and science fiction adventures magazines until nova publications was bought by roberts & vinter at the end of 1963, and carnell was replaced by the new owners as editor of these magazines by young enthusiasts such as michael moorcock and friends, on new worlds, and by kyril bonfiglioni on science fantasy.
initially promoted as a quarterly, "new writings in science fiction" only rarely maintained that frequency, but was for thirty anthologies and thirteen years - out-living john carnell by half a decade in the capable hands of ken bulmer - for most of its lifespan the primary uk & commonwealth market for sf authors, and published much that was great fun, as well as absorbing and sometimes very powerful reading.

no priority established nor liable to be, both state bantam edition published april 1966 (this comment is from another edition of this book)
(& the 0-lacking number-string on the cover is the 9-digit sbn - standard book number; it was the precursor to the ten-digit isbn and iirc initially uk-publisher specific, spreading to merkin publishers ''little-by-little, bit-by-bit''; the incorporation of the sbn into the isbn system was achieved by prefixing the sbns with ''0'', which did not affect the checksum digit - a nifty bit of work(™)...)
(transworld publishers started adding the ten-digit isbn to the publishing indica on the reverse of their books' the title pages before they got around to updating/changing their use of cover sbns to using isbns - so it's possible this reissue does in fact bear the isbn there, as well as the sbn on the front cover...) ° - we had to search out sf way back then, and be thankful if & when we found any - no matter how bad the cover art. . . (this comment is from another edition of this book)
