| ppint. 20th Mar 2018 | Reviewcollection of eight short stories and three novelettes set in orsinia, linked to one another and to her novel, "malafrena" (1979), q.v. i think i can best represent these as historical fiction set in an alternate austro-hungarian empire's equivalent of our's nineteenth or late eighteenth centuries; well-described, frequently sumptuous settings and countrysides, and just maybe an underlying feel that the luxurious living, and the appreciation of the arts and the most intricate works of craftsmen & women, of this society's wealthy overlies a deep fundamental instability. . . 1 person found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? | |
| ppint. 2nd Jan 2018 | granada publishing panther books p/b first printing, first state; first thus cover art by peter goodfellow front cover bears isbn 0586 94735 2 cover price 75p, $2.15 australia, $2.25 new zealand, $2.25 canada so should be re-flagged "international" according to respected moderator's rule - or not so re-flagged, according to equally well-respected moderator's heartfelt plea 176pp. including titles, indicia etc, end p. advertising first printing, second state: same printing "up-priced" by obliteration of original cover price (75p) in the process of printing the new price of £1.50 upon the rear cover, a common process used by granada publishing - grafton books° on stock whose original cover price had been overtaken by inflation through at least the end of the seventies-early eighties. ° - and some other publishers: howard & wyndham/w. h. allen's universal, -/tandem & star imprints - obliteration of old prices & bar-codes mostly done in hatched silver or gold-coloured metallic-looking inks; pinnacle/paramount titles distributed in the uk (& some territories beyond?), solid silver-coloured ink oblong cartouches; penguin group imprints including penguin & puffin, puffin plus, thick lines using a very persistent ?plastic-based? black inkstuff. . . | |
