ppint. 12th May 2018		fiction, historical/history, western explanation of j. t. edson's dedication reservation: brian babani was one of the co-owners of brown, watson ltd. and j. t. edson's originating publishers until they sold all his book contracts & copyrights to transworld publishers ltd. they are now best-remembered for their "digit books" imprint, but they also published under the over-all company name, and as "wagon wheel westerns" (briefly), and as "sabre". they employed no specialist editorial staff, seeing no need whatsoever for editors with any knowledge of the fields in which they were publishing, and rarely had as many as half a dozen employees in all despite being one of the major london (& uk) paperback publishers through the mid-sxties, by number of titles published. but whilst they were happy to publish a new western a month - or a fortnight - or even every week - from j. t. edson, they weren't interested in his attempting to vary the formula from the heyday of the cowboy, and the wild west of the nineteenth century - so his modern-day rockabye county stories had to wait until pat newman (?and diane lloyd?) at transworld publishers heard of them, encouraged him to write them down (or type them up), and bought them for - successful - publication as corgi books. reference copy provided by courtesy of tony at the old pier bookshop, morecambe
