The best thing about this book is its back-cover photograph.I don't have the book any more, just the back-cover which I still use as a bookmark.

My Friend Jack, you say it: "What oft was thought, but ne'er so well exprest." This little book had also a big influence on me.

One of the most important books I ever bought - this is the one that started my fascination with chart history. The chart log, towards the back of the book gave me my first detailed insight into which records had been hits in the 2 or 3 years prior to my birth, right through to when I was almost a teenager. I remember seeing this book mentioned in adverts on the chart page of the NME but I can't recall where I actually got my first copy from - probably the shop which was later known as the London Street Bookshop in Reading (at the time I think it was called William Smith).

As well as listing every Top 20 hit from 1955 to 1969, this book also presented the Top 100 selling #1s from 1962 to 1972, as played on Tony Blackburn's Radio 1 Breakfast Show. I vividly remember how excited I was as Tony revealed that the Beatles' "She Loves You" was at #1 on that list. I also recall a letter to the Radio Times complaining how few Motown records were included - the response was that all record companies had been asked to reveal sales figures, so the BBC stood by the list. There was, of course, a much better answer that they could have given - that, despite a huge number of hits, Motown had only had a small number of chart-toppers. But in 1972, getting your hands on something so basic as a list of #1 hits was close to impossible. This was the book that started to change all that...
