Its rail lines reach from Portland to Ogden to New Orleans, and once extended to Guadalajara, Mexico. The historic Southern Pacific at one time operated a large narrow gauge empire, a fleet of river boats and ferries, massive electric suburban railroads, and dealt with every climatic extreme to be found in North America. The steam locomotive wasn't invented on the SP, nor did it reach its final flowering here, but the Southern Pacific was and is unrivaled in the interest its steam locomotives have generated over the years. Countless models and model railroading detail items have been produced to represent SP steam power.
