Southern Pacific Historic Diesels is a series of pictorial histories defining the growth and development of the Southern Pacific’s fleet of diesel locomotives. The goal of this series is to publish and present in text and photos a record of Southern Pacific dieselization since the fleet’s beginnings in the late 1930s. This volume, Vol. 5, investigates General Electric’s 1962-1975 contribution to the Southern Pacific roster, in the form of 334 U-series locomotives. All had in common the four-cycle, 16 cylinder 7-FDL engine licensed from Cooper-Bessemer and #752 traction motors. This book is about the 334 General Electric 'U-boats' from the U-25B and U50 through U33C locomotives owned by the Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt railroads. Includes system-wide action and portrait photography during the brief time in the 1960s and 1970s when U-series diesels worked everywhere on the Southern Pacific. Includes 180+ b&w and 3 color photographs plus roster.
