 ''shameless'' is not the subtitle of this book:

it is the full title under which the book was previously published.

because disreputable publishers were republishing their back catalogue unrecognisably, under new titles and bearing different cover art, it was made a legal requirement for merkin mmpb publishers° to advise previous titles on their books' front covers if they retitled them.°°

° - the law may well have applied also to merkin h/cvr publishers; but as they were generally publishing the first editions of books, or reprinting these to fulfill ongoing demand for them, they were not commonly involved in mass re-titling of books in order to mislead potential customers...

°° - and yes, that left a loophole of sorts: it seems that the law did not apply if a previous publisher had changed the title
