nboldock: there was a schlock horror craze from the late 70s in the uk-of-gb-&-ni - as opposed to the horror-fantasy (and the weird fantasy-that-got-published-as-horror) before the craze: it could be (and often was) quickly-written by various editors' ''stables'' of hack writers - professional writers who'd turn out a competent, but usually uninspired short novel to order, usually inside a month, and often within the week(!), and generally *very* dependent upon invoking/provoking one or other of the common human vermin-animal- or organic-corrution- based phobias: the better examples also had believable plots, with elements of suspense building up to scenes of shock - and some even had believable women characters!

- for a while, they sold in their tens and hundreds of thousands, even the poorly-written ones, not least because the (basically newsagents') wholesalers liked them: they could order the same number of every title the reliable horror fiction p/b publishers released, shift the lot (or nigh-on) and get stuck with minimal returns. titles such as ''spiders'', ''slither'', ''slugs'' . . . - with or without ''shrieks'' (exclamation marks) - were the order of the day°, guy n. smith and alan radnor, etc., including professional romance writers (under various pseudonyms and house names) were reliable sellers, and the best of the commercial editors, such as peter lavery at hamlyn paperbacks, made their publishers a *lot* of money.

- were any of them any good? well, none of those that yr hmbl srppnt. read, not by my reckoning:

- they - naturally? - tended to turn any promising ideas capable of further developments that might intrigue straight towards a shock'n'horror pay-off (ignoring ramifications and implications that might produce long-lasting food for thought), which i found predictable and boring.

- but many people liked them at the time, if only as ''read once, and throw away!'' fodder.

.
° - nancy, who took over some of the more ''tiresome'' (to peter) authors, and i joked - and she agreed she'd try to get one author to produce & submit - one to be titled ''squelch!''. . .°°

4/7/2019 addendum:
°° - and she succeeded! john halkin, who was not at all tiresome, so entitled his thrid in his ''slither'' trilogy - and i didn't know 'til this summer!

Oh my, I've actually read this! Just saw the cover and thought, "I used to have that" - read it as a young lad (I was a bit ahead of my years in terms of books) - can't remember a thing about it, mind. I assume it's as dreadful as it looks :-).
