On 4 November 1963 The Beatles featured on the bill of the Royal Variety Performance at the Prince of Wales Theatre (near London's Leicester Square), held in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a lifetime patron of the Royal Variety Charity, couldn't attend the concert as she was pregnant with Prince Edward, so in her place, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret represented the monarchy.

“Beatles Rock the Royals” and “Night of Triumph for Four Young Men” ran the next day’s headlines in The Daily Express and Daily Mail. The Daily Mirror’s editorial gushed, “YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! You have to be a real sour square not to love the nutty, noisy, happy, handsome Beatles.” In the week that followed, The Daily Express ran five front-page stories on the boys.

ITV had been chosen to broadcast the show and recorded their most viewed show of all time when it was broadcast on 10 November 1963 to 21.2 million people.
