From the dust-jacket:

Beatles worship is perennial. Bridging a serious gap in the fandom market, The Beatles Literary Anthology is a collection of the best writing on the Beatles by rock journalists, cultural commentators, journalists, scholars and biographers, alongside personal contributions from the Beatles themselves, their friends and acquaintances.

This compendium spans the whole of the Beatles' career from accounts of the group's rise in 1962 to analyses of their cultural legacy - via the British Merseybeat scene; the 'British invasion' of the USA; the experiments with song structure and sound recording techniques that redefined pop music forever, and the Beatles' embracing of psychedelic drugs, hippie utopianism and pacifism, all set against the social changes of the mid-to-late 1960s.

This unique volume also focuses upon the band's acrimonious split, and the disparate, sometimes tragic, post-Beatles paths followed by John, Paul, George and Ringo. The extremes of a pop sensation unparalleled in terms of mass-media fame are also examined in thought provoking articles. These explore the conflicting personalities of Lennon and McCartney, the spiritual beliefs of Harrison, and Lennon's attempts to live with his increasingly messianic status. Also examined is the darker side of Beatlemania: the paranoia of the American Far Right that marked the Beatles as agents of Communism; the insane 'messages' that the Manson Family deciphered from Beatles lyrics, and the obsession of disturbed Beatles fan Mark Chapman, culminating in a tragic attempt to steal a little of Lennon's fame.

The Beatles Literary Anthology is essential reading for any serious Beatles fan, and a fascinating overview of a band who continue to exert a huge influence on music and popular culture.
