ppint. 15th Jan 2022		covid-19 brainfog lifting: because sheets of paper have two sides°, books have an even number of pages: and because of the way paper folds - and because of the number of times a standard sized sheet of paper is folded to get the page size (after the folded printed sheet is guillotined) of the book being produced, ° - möbius strips aside... the cheapest production cost per page is provided by making books that are a whole number of multiples of 64 pages - so, 64pp, 128pp, 192pp, 256pp, 320pp, 384pp, etc; next-cheapest per page is a whole multiple of 64pp. plus one of 32pp. (or, if folding the starting sheet of paper that many times would give too small a page, a whole multiple of 32): 32pp, 64pp, 96pp, 128pp, 160pp, 192pp, 224pp, 256pp, 288pp, 320pp, 352pp, 384pp, etc; next-cheapest per page is a whole multiple of 64pp. plus one of 32pp, plus one of 16pp. (or, whole multiple of 32pp. plus one of 16pp; or, for a larger page size, a whole multiple of 16pp.) 16pp, 32pp, 48pp, 64pp, 80pp, 96pp, 102pp, 128pp, 144pp, 160pp, 176pp, 192pp, 208pp, 224pp, 240pp, 256pp, 272pp, 288pp, 304pp, 320pp, 336pp, 352pp, 368pp, 384pp, etc; and so on. the higher marginal costs of more complex constructions of the printed, folded and guillotined book carcase means that canny publishers like the late jim baen's baen books often decided to choose a whole multiple of 64pp. even though this would potentially produce a mmpb book with 63 blank pages at the end; baen books would then run an introductory chapter or two of the next book in the series they were simultaneously publishing in its hardcover first edition - a cunning plan to get you hooked on hardcovers! - - and then as many as a dozen pages advertising other books baen'd published by the same author, and other authors whose books you might well enjoy, because they're - more-or-less - similar...

ppint. 10th Jan 2022		i have the feeling that the quality of paper used for this second^W third(?) printing is considerably lower than that used for the first doubleday uk h/cvr printing of this omnibus - i must check that this is indeed the case.
