In 2019, the Carpenters 50th anniversary year (50 years since signing with A&M Records) The Carpenters Music Survey, asked 26 wide ranging questions covering many aspects of their careers and musical legacy. There were only a handful of tick-box / multiple choice questions in the survey, after that, the questions were mainly designed to encourage written answers. Written answers allowed people to write a combination of genuine, honest, heartfelt, emotional responses. Which of course any Carpenters fan can easily relate to and appreciate. The survey also reached many clear conclusions and discovered a few surprises too.--The Carpenters Music Survey was completed by a wide assortment of people including, long time Carpenters fans, singers and tribute singers, musicians; including female drummers.--The book is set out in a way that generally follows the same layout as the original survey. Also, the book tries to make it as clear and easy as possible to understand the responses to each question, and for extra clarity there is also a summary at the end section before moving on to the next question.--The book begins with questions which throw some light on who is listening to the Carpenters, their age group and sex. It is easy to assume that only people of a certain age listen to the Carpenters, but is that actually so? What about the mix of male and female listeners, is it an even mix, or doses one sex appear to be listening in greater numbers; this survey gives the answer.--Do people have a favourite Carpenters album, or do they love them all equally? This would be an essential question in a music survey for any pop group. Intriguingly, the survey gives the answer very clearly, with two albums very close together at the top of the list.--One question asked if there is a hidden gem amongst their music catalogue (a lesser known song that deserved to be heard more.) A long intriguing list of songs came up in responses to this question, all of which were good candidates for the title of hidden gem. There may well be a hidden gem amongst them all that is unknown to you at present, a song that you would enjoy immensely, if you only knew about it.--Is there a song that means a lot to you personally? This was a question that produced a wide range of responses, and the summery at the end of this section is a touching read.--Are there any lyrics from a Carpenters song that really resonate with you personally, or make you feel quite emotional? As you can imagine many song titles and lyrics came in response to this question, and the lyrics from one song in particular came up again and again. The summary to this section is quite an interesting read. --Is there a song the Carpenters never sang, but they would have liked to have heard them record? The list of song titles in response to this question makes a thought-provoking read, as you try to imagine how the Carpenters version of certain songs might have sounded. Amongst all of the song titles are many excellent and intriguing choices.--Karen's voice means so much to people, even now all these years after her death. The survey asked people to describe her voice. And as you can imagine the answers make for fascinating reading, combined with so much love and appreciation for Karen. Without a doubt Karen had one of the greatest female voices of all time, and this question allowed people to share their thoughts about her voice.--Imagine if Karen was still alive today, and you had the chance to talk to her, what would you like to say to her? This question really engaged with people, and there were certainly a lot of things people wanted to say to her on a wide variety of topics, including: her drumming, as a role model, self-worth / self-image, love, voice and singing, and assorted thanks.--This is the kind of book that you can easily read in one session, and yet, if you read it again, with each new reading it will reveal more to you. It is a surprisingly emotional read in places too. |
