Author Colin MacFarlane recalls his great friendship and drinking exploits with the legendary Allan Williams

Back in the 1980s I found myself in Liverpool going for an interview for a job as a journalist with the Daily Post. It turned out to be very disappointing, so I headed down to Mathew Street to have a drink in the Beatles pub The Grapes. Much to my surprise, when I entered the bar, Allan Williams was there holding court and clutching a large glass of red wine. It was like a magical scene, hey presto!! The man who discovered the Beatles was before me and easy company to fall into.

I had seen him on the ‘Imagine’ documentary a few months before and Paul McCartney praising him as the little Welsh man who was the Beatles first manager. As you can imagine Allan was no slouch at telling outlandish stories whilst his cronies listened with a degree of astonishment on their faces. It was a bizarre afternoon which turned into a boozy long night; we later ended up in the nearby pub the White Star where the Beatles would often meet. Over the years I would regularly meet Allan and it was almost impossible to stay sober, his favourite tipple was red wine which he downed like a thirsty sailor. Allan recounted brilliant stories to me about the early Beatles and Brian Epstein; the stories became more embellished as vast quantities of red wine went down his throat.

It can be argued that this insignificant looking man propping up the bar was the biggest influence in getting the Beatles started. Allan had a great sense of humour and reflected on losing the Beatles, he said to me during one boozy session “I might be the fool who lost the Beatles, but I’ve lived long enough to tell the tale.”
