Of necessity, events happen alphabetically in this
encyclopedia, Styles, Schools, Descendants, march in an orderly fashion from A to Z and from crude origins to contemporary sophistication. Improvised music doesn't happen that way. The genealogical tree of Jazz is more like a monkey puzzle, with clear and direct descedants as rare as navels in Eden, so that labels can never be more than a convenient shorthand.
The Jazz lineage, a less tidy affair than the Christian marriage, is constantly subject to re-alignment.
