This play was adapted from John Lennon's bestselling books In His Own Write and A Spaniard In The Works[/i] by the American dramatist Adrienne Kennedy and presented by the National Theatre for a Sunday night performance in 1967, under the direction of Victor Spinetti. The text has since been revised and expanded by Lennon and Spinetti. In June [1968] the play went into the National Theatre repertory.

Spinetti writes in his Forward:

'This play is about the growing up of any of us: the things that helped us to be more aware. We used John's poems to show "the influences upod us", such as the reading of comic books, going to school, a first visit to the theatre, visits to the cinema, going to church, and the effect of all the things that pour into a home via the TV and radio...The play became a kind of journey of growth: about the beginning of things, childish at first and then more serious as ME began to appreciate the wonder of words and of himself.'
