ppint. 15th Jan 2022		nicky: yours is almost certainly one of transworld publishers' corgi books first printing of the first p/b edition of the light fantastic, given its cover price of £1.95 - coded in the second, smaller bar-code bloc as 00195 - implicitly in pence, as it's a uk bar-code.° the second printing would have stated ''corgi edition reprinted 1987'' in the publishing history on the reverse of the title page (using a number line and progressively dropping the lowest remaining digit to indicate a further reprint didn't come in 'til later); and so on. transworld publishers re-set the first couple of their p/b editions of the discworld novels, which is stated in the indicia printing history, and also betrayed by an increase in the pagination - aka the extent of the p/b edition, = the number of pages in the p/b edition increases, because it's been re-set in larger type. ° - and it were a merkin bar-code on a mass-market p/b (''mmpb''), the price would be encoded either in the second smaller bar-code bloc implicitly in merkin cents (so 00399 would = u.s. $3.99); - or, for a while, the merkins used a weird variation in which the first, larger bar-code bloc encoded either the publisher or the distributor (after the initial language indicator) followed by the cover price in cents, with the catalog number (cat#) in the separate smaller block - and no checksum digit in the cat# block!

ppint. 5th Aug 2019		unless the text was re-set, or new cover art used, they're all simple reprintings of the first corgi p/b edition: commenting which printing, and its publication date, and the cover prices it bears (and occasionally, that the back cover blurb has changed, and to what, if & when it has) is surely all that's really needed - no?

ppint. 22nd Apr 2021		cover (& d-j) art by josh kirby (major detail from colin smythe first edition h/cvr) cover (d-j) price £4.99 n.b. though the printing of the text is clear, the carcass is neither sewn nor glued onto a strong, flexible backing-strip of any variety and that consequently the full strain of opening the book is borne by the endpapers, unreinforced by any material hinge. the endpapers tear extremely easily under perfectly ordinary usage. (this comment is from another edition of this book)
