| ppint. 19th Dec 2021 | famously filmed featuring fousands of filmstars: some in only one-off, strictly cameo, scenes, some in recurring slight rôles, and some as major players, movers and shakers of the events, and some of those preventing action being taken also, on both sides of the channel - and of the conflict; in addition, the differences of opinion within the allied commands, and the differences over tactics, and some of the major rivalries splitting the german command are covered, and a good indication of how great a gamble allied commander-in-chief of the greatest amphibious assaust ever, general eisenhower was taking when he reluctantly gave the go-ahead, too. much less is made of the strategic considerations, some (like the reasons for the near-absence of the luftwaffe on the day) being only hinted at, and some being left completely unmentioned - though the reason for the delay in the deployment of the wehrmacht's panzer armies is well covered; but there was serious doubt in the studio that zanuck's film would repay twentieth century fox's investment at the length it was distributed - any longer would've been considered certain commercial suicide. a classic film that will go on getting shown and re-shown on one of the uk tv major's channels until the last of the baby boom kids shuffles off this mortal coil - and maybe a while longer than that. the book, though... the book is somewhat slower, and yr hmbl srppnt. found it considerably less evocative, and so much less gripping. works best as a reminder of how very good the film is. | |
