Fascinating and beautifully done history of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, a once active line created by the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe that featured every kind of rail (standard and narrow gauge), motive power (steam, electric, and gas-electric), and scenery (The Crookedest Railroad in the World, the redwood forests, and San Francisco Bay).

Chronological history clarifies the creation of the line from 42 (!) other railroads, details construction and abandonments over the years, and examines the structures (stations, trestles, bridges, tunnels, roundhouses and turntables, cars and boats, and water facilities) that gave it such a unique character.

An extensive chapter on the locomotives includes a multi-page roster.

Illustrated throughout with hundreds of black and white photos.

With maps, timetables, statistics and decorative end papers.

304 pages with index

When I post in this book, all comments show up in both volumes. :(

This is Volume 2. When I posted a comment for Volume two, it showed up here. I'm not sure why this happened.

Volume 2 in this series portrays the Northwestern Pacific in the turbulent, post-World War II years -- the last days of NW steam, the Southern Pacific steam that took its place, the demise of steam and transition to diesel, the floods and tunnel fires that suspended service for months, the increased competition from trucks for the lumber hauling, and the financial distress that brought the NP to its knees. With a chapter on the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad and the birth of the Eureka Southern. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos including rare photographs of freight and maintenance-of-way cars from the early years. With maps, locomotive leasing statistics (steam and diesel), and Milepost Minder (scenic guide) for the North Coast Daylight. 177 pages with index.
