ppint. 27th Jan 2022		hutchinson or century hutchinson's arrow books' hamlyn paperbacks imprint, not first uk p/b cover art (typographical design dominating a subdued-multicoloured hangman's style noose on a pimpled grey background) cover price (dig it out & check - and were there two printings?) 288pp? including titles, indica etc, end p. arrow books (or one of its parent companies) bought hamlyn paperbacks - or the chaos that walter clare had made of it, and ralph stokes unsurprisingly failed to rescue as emergency-but-borderline-senile replacement managing director - from the hamlyn publishing group as part of the price of being allowed to poach peter lavery away from hamlyn as their new editorial director. unfortunately, anthony cheetham was able to borrow enough cash and/or credit for his century books to buy the much larger hutchinson publishing group, including arrow books, and neither he nor conrad, his managing director, was prepared to tolerate anyone who did not own their position in the grandly (if briefly) concatenated ''century-hutchinson publishing group'' retaining their position for long... so: the tail end of most of the titles bought for the hamlyn paperbacks list appeared, at first with the hamlyn ''H'' logo varied in colour from its classical red, bearing arrow books' 0099-prefixed isbns; then with arrow logo & arrow group isbns - and the tail end of hamlyn paperbacks faded into history. (the hamlyn publishing group lasted quite a bit longer, metamorphosing as it went, and even continued publishing paperbacks - but its attempt to build a major commercial uk paperback imprint was over.)
