ppint. 15th Dec 2023		cat# is wrong and should^W has been deleted this is the brown, watson ltd. digit books imprint p/b first printing published ~1957 it bears no cat# the attributed cat# R521 is that of the second printing, and not correctly given to this first printing. brown, watson ltd. habitually allocated new cat#s to each new printing; the letter indicates the cover price, (none = 1'6 but these likely bear no cat# at all, just as some - the earliest - of the 2/- don't) digit books numbering started in 4/1958 with cat# D139 (source aligemkr-books.blogspot.com) digit books cat# price code letters: D = 2/-, R = 2'6

ppint. 27th Nov 2023		brown, watson ltd.'s digit books imprint was closed down late 1964; this may well've been connected with the bankruptcy of thorpe & porter ltd, the news wholesalers, owing their various book suppliers between three months (the normal maximum) and six months - or more - money for stock supplied on credit. brown, watson ltd. continued to publish uk paperback editions of books at a much slower rate, finally tailing off to none in about mid-late-1966. they continued to publish annuals (for the christmas trade, primarily), and were eventually absorbed into one arm or another of a sprawling octopus of the merkin publishing industry.
