ppint. 13th Mar 2021		first simon & schuster h/cvr printing, first edition (rebound ex-library copy (now rather tatty), so little to be gleaned except probable extent:) 448pp? including titles, indica etc. bound with endpapers between (re-)covered boards would've been issued in paper d-j bearing retail price filmed 1969 with some very memorable performances, by hardy küger as the head officer of a german army detachment sent to seize the principal movable - indeed, very liquid - assets of the area, by anna magnani as the necessarily strong wife of the bumbling buffoon, italo bombalini, newly-elected mayor - elected at least partly as a joke - and not least by anthony quinn as bombalini, himself, in perhaps the classic performance of the clever clown of an italian small town mayor masquerading as a drunken fool - or is it the classic performance of the clever fool of the italian small town mayor masquerading as a drunken clown - or of a clever drunken mayor masquerading as a fool, and the only man who can thus bamboozle the now-occupying german army in italy's officers and men in their search for the hastily-hidden four fifths of the entire village and area's stocks and store of their superb, and dearly-loved wine - succeed, *and* get away with it alive - if he's extremely convincing - and also extremely lucky - ?
