 at least eight printings exist with this cover art by bruce pennington: three in 1981, one in 1982, two in 1983, one each in 1984 and 1985, with cover prices rising through £1.60, £1.75 iirc, £1.95, and £2.25; i don't remember whether they'd reached £2.50 before the cover art on all four was changed to peter "paj" jones' very different images of severian with "shadow"'s1986 ninth printing . . .

the true first arrow p/b printing has no white box cut out of the wraparound cover art for insertion of the first (& subsequent) increase in cover price.
