ppint. 5th Dec 2017		the book shown is the uk transworld publishers ltd.-distributed imported merkin mmpb edition, front cover (in this case) stamped with uk net price. transworld publishers (corgi/black swan/corgi children's books) catalogues-cum-order-leaflets listed bantam titles they imported and distributed bearing a uk cover price in the main publishing category sections with some modification of their cat#, e.g. prefixed with a "Q" even if that was not the merkin price code prefix, and later converting the/at least one of the 0s following the "0-553" of the bantam isbn into a "6". that this would immediately render the full bantam uk isbn invalid (should anyone attempt to use it), did not appear to matter: what seemed to be essential was that its cat# on the transworld publishers computer could not be confused with that of a home-grown title. it was also followed by a raised asterisk. transworld publishers were also constrained, a little later, to produce uk-printed books using the bantam imprint: confusingly, these also used the 0-553- merkin bantam books isbn prefix, but a cat# (plus checksum digit) originated for their edition. where this was of a book licenced from bantam books, inc., the same title would have at least two different valid bantam books isbns - with yet another, if transworld publishers produced a hardcover "bantam press" imprint edition.. - at least bantam press isbns' prefix was usually 0-593-. . .. weird and sometimes wonderful are the ways of publishers; that they occasionally also make sense, is purest chance.
