yr hmbl srppnt. does not know whether the story,
"the warlock's grandfather" (novella) original in stasheff's collection, "mind out of time" (2003), q.v.
includes the character, rod gallowglass - or even "fess" - within its pages.°

(this last was announced as a forthcoming tor uk/pan books/pan macmillan title for 19/4/2008
but it would seem not to've been published; by including #7, unless contents varied from u.s,
it would have overlapped the contents of the 1991 uk omnibus "the warlock's night out".)
prequels to the warlock of gramarye (rod gallowglass) series:
"st. vidicon to the rescue" (2005), q.v.
is arguably a prequel to the entire warlock of gramarye series, since various characters in the series either swear by, make expostulation concerning, or take st. vidicon for having had real life existence within stasheff's fictional setting.
yr hmbl srppnt. does not know whether the novel incorporates two earlier-published st. vidicon stories°:
"the martyrdom of st. vidicon of cathode" (novella) original in stasheff's collection "mind out of time" (2003), q.v.
"the afterlife of st. vidicon of cathode" (novelette) in the original anthology "masters of fantasy" edited by brian thomsen & bill fawcett (2004), q.v.
° - advice from any bookcatter knowledgeable upon either or both points would be welcome
Rated 8/10#1 and first-written of the "warlock of gramarye" fantasy/sf novels featuring rod gallowglass, his robot black horse, "fess", brom o'beirin (sp?) and gwendolyn, and tom, leavening the sometimes very serious problems and situations faced by the characters with a refreshing ability of the major players as well as the minor to miscalculate and even make outright mistakes, set on a somewhat anomalous planet, in a rather peculiarly-arranged world originally settled by a fairly broad assortment of excessively romantic medieval recreationalists, and told with a lightness of touch that generally does not undermine the story by forcing a mental double check during the reading. . .
("king kobold" (ace books 1971), q.v., the sequel, was later rewritten and published in considerably different form entitled "king kobold revived" (ace books 1984), q.v.; it is sufficiently different a story from the original version, to read the earlier story as a "road not taken", a variant that remains enjoyable for itself (if somewhat confusédly).)
(and immediately before this, christopher stasheff wrote a prequel to the first three of the rod gallowglass/ warlock of gramarye series, "escape velocity" (1983), which is an enjoyable sf novel - but which lacks much of the magic feel of the first half dozen of the series, rather, since ''gramarye'' has yet to be founded.)
